Design, Engineering and Architectural Technologies
Editors: Rivka Oxman and Robert Oxman

AD – Architectural Design
July/August 2010 John Wiley & Sons 136 pages

Today the convergence of design, engineering and architectural technologies are breeding a new material practice in architecture. In this pioneering publication, this important shift is fully defined as a highly dynamic synthesis of emerging principles of spatial, structural and material ordering integrated through the application of materialisation and fabrication technologies. Providing the foundations for a new theory of structuring in architecture, The New Structuralism has broad implications for the way we both conceive and undertake architectural design, as its impact starts to emanate not only across education internationally, but also through architectural research and practice.

Based upon this pioneering issue of AD, The New Structuralism will be the subject of a symposium sponsored by the Chair of Architecture and Digital Fabrication. The symposium will be held at the Architekturforum in Zu”rich on the 7th of October 2010 between the hours 14:00 and 19:30.

The purpose of the symposium is to present and discuss the emerging relationships between architectural design, design engineering and fabrication design. Proposing these emerging relationships as an important new paradigm of design, The New Structuralism will provide a forum for thought and discussion regarding this emerging integration of design disciplines and technologies.

Among the speakers who will participate are: Martin Bechthold (Harvard); Klaus Bollinger/Manfred Grohmann/Oliver Tessmann (B+G, Frankfurt); John Chilton (NTU); Fabio Gramazio/Matthias Kohler (ETHZ); Wolf Mangelsdorf (Buro Happold); Julio Martinez Calzon/Carlos Castanon (MC2 Engr., Madrid); Neri Oxman (MIT); Rivka Oxman (IIT); Robert Oxman (IIT); Helmut Pottman (TU Wien); Nina Rappaport (Yale); Fabian Scheurer (DESIGNTOPRODUCTION); Yves Weinand/Markus Hudert (EPFL)

Contemporary advances in design are shaped by computational design methods, strategies and technologies, regardless of whether these advances are manifested in the design and construction of a building, in related theory and analysis, or in the ways in which future designers and scholars are educated. Architectural computation in the post-digital era calls for new ideas that will transcend conventional boundaries and support creative insights through design and into design. “Circuit Bending, Breaking and Mending” provides an interdisciplinary context for challenging traditional paradigms and invites researchers and practitioners alike to (re)consider and (re)address design and computation with a particular focus on three themes:
Innovative design conceptualisation and support through computational theories and technologies.
Enhanced knowledge of architecture and design through computational analysis.
Improved approaches to design education through computational thinking and applications.

CAADRIA 2011 invites submissions of original research papers, posters and exhibitions on topics related to computer-aided design, including but not limited to:
Design intelligence and automation
Computational design analysis
Generative and parametric design

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
Active until 9/15/10

The 2011 ARCC Spring Architectural Research Conference invites papers by those conducting architectural research, in both academia and the profession, which reflects on current and future architectural research. Papers by PhD candidates and other graduate students are encouraged and will be included in a special session.

In addressing this year’s theme, the conference will explore the following issues of how can research help us reflect on various contemporary environmental, sustainable, social, political, formal, and psychological paradigms. The exploration is expected to raise questions around the impacts of these paradigms, whether they have they addressed what they claimed they intend to address, examine where they stand and what effect might they have, and, ultimately, consider how research is an integrated part of our practice and discipline.

The 2010 ARCC Spring Architectural Research Conference is an intra- and inter-disciplinary conference on architectural research. The specific areas of the conference include, but are not limited to, reflection on research that pertains to the following:

Presentation slots are limited in this academic conference. Individuals affiliated with ARCC Member Institutions will be given preferential placement for paper/presentation if those submittals meet academic quality and theme standards. ARCC is committed to our member schools.

Keynote Speakers
The ARCC 2011 Conference will have several keynote speakers spread across the conference dates. The first release of a keynote speaker is Alan M. Berger. Alan’s talk will be on aimed at the idea of what the world could be as opposed to what normative practice produces out of the limitations of the current systems.

“Alan Berger is Associate Professor of Urban Design and Landscape Architecture at Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he teaches courses in the department of urban studies and planning. He founded and directs P-REX, The Project for Reclamation Excellence (www.theprex.net), a multi-disciplinary research effort at MIT focusing on the design and reuse of deindustrialized landscapes worldwide. By using low-angle aerial photography, maps, and other graphic evidence, Berger visually reveals evidence and trends of landscape waste throughout the world―from public health hazards such as abandoned mine pits, mountains of slag, and pools of cyanide, to vacant land, landfills, military installations, and places associated with high and low-density urbanization. How these sites are cleansed, valued and considered for adaptive reuse at local and regional scales is Berger’s main area of interest. His work emphasizes the link between our consumption of natural resources, and the waste and destruction of landscape, to help us better understand how to proceed with redesigning our wasteful places for future productive uses and more sustainable outcomes. Berger currently serves as a consultant to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Brownfield and Superfund site revitalization in the American landscape.

His book Drosscape: Wasting Land in Urban America, published in 2006, won I.D. Magazine’s 53rd Annual Design Review Silver Medal for Design Distinction, and was named a top 10 planning book of 2007 by Planetizen. His 2002 book, Reclaiming the American West, received the Research Award from the Environmental Design Research Association and Places Magazine, and was named a Colorado Book of the Year by the Center for the Book. His other books include Designing the Reclaimed Landscape, published by Taylor & Francis in January 2008, and co-edited Nansha Coastal City: Landscape and Urbanism in the Pearl River Delta, published in early 2006.” (from: http://web.mit.edu/aberger/www/)

Introduction

Built and natural environments are ultimately and collectively tangible records of history and as “heritage” belong to time. Conservation, in its broadest sense, is concerned with the assessment of these environments in order to make it relevant for the present and ensure its survival in the future. At present, different legislative bodies are involved in promoting the conservation of the built and natural environments with minimal consideration of the interconnections between the two areas of conservation. A critical discussion regarding confluence of built and natural heritage in promoting the notion of “cultural landscape” is essential to further and more comprehensively develop the field of conservation.

The proposed CSAAR 2011 conference will bridge the fields of architectural and environmental conservation. It aspires to bring together scholars from multiple disciplines and focus on conservation ethics as an essential component of environmental design within existing urban settings. As cities in the region grow and evolve at an unprecedented rapid pace, reversing the threats facing historic cultural landscape requires rethinking of the field of conservation.

Cultural landscapes can encompass vast and diverse areas, which are usually administered by different territorial and specialized authorities (e.g. the Ministries of Culture, Housing, Urban Planning, Tourism, Environment, Agriculture, Water Resources etc.). Therefore, the different national and local authorities responsible for zoning, infrastructure development, environmental and architectural conservation must establish effective co-ordination and define appropriate management tools to preserve authentic features of cultural landscapes. Integrity of the relationship between natural and built (cultural) environments is essential for sustainable conservation, making it a shared responsibility.

In recent decades, most practitioners and professional networks of conventional approaches to heritage conservation have limited their foci to only one or two of the following scales: interior building and building; building and site; site and neighbourhood; and neighbourhood, landscape and metropolitan region. Today, with increasingly complex and daunting environmental change, more holistic approaches to responding to conservation needs require thinking and operating at these four scales or more. Several disciplines must take part in giving a new lease of life to historic buildings and sites. Archaeologists excavate layers of history to piece together and reconstruct the social and cultural life of a past civilization. Architects investigate what these artifacts mean to the diverse stakeholders in the present to develop a comprehensive conservation plan. Conservationists document, interpret and pursue a course of action to preserve, restore, or conserve the physical aspects of significant monuments. Curators ensure the appropriate restoration and public display of artworks associated with these monuments. Conservation of cultural heritage thus pursued can promote sustainable survival of the built and natural environments.

Topics of Interest

For the professional community to engage meaningfully in conservation of the cultural landscape, responsibilities and opportunities revolving around these activities need to be recalled, analyzed, and articulated. The conference addresses the cultural landscape theme through main program, the subject of this announcement; and through a special program, the subject of a separate announcement for the conference on Digital Media and its Applications in Cultural Heritage (See website: http://www.csaar-center.org/conference/DMACH2011) The main program has the five research tracks below. We invite practitioners, educators, and researchers from the fields of architectural and environmental conservation to develop a paper in any of the topics listed under the theme tracks.

Simulation and visualisation

Introduction

Over the past few years, a remarkable increase has occurred in the use of digital techniques for the documentation, management, and communication of cultural heritage. This has drastically transformed the way we capture, store, process, represent and disseminate information. The techniques employed have evolved from standard surveying and CAD tools and/or traditional photogrammetry into laser scanning virtual reality and fully automated video-based techniques. However, it is often argued that digital media tend to create and compile value-free content and thus are inefficient in capturing and communicating cultural and symbolic meanings. Digital media, as any other medium, tend to amplify or reduce the cultural phenomena as a result of their constraints and limitations. Thus the issue of using digital media for cultural heritage is by no means a simple one and must be examined from different angles. The aim of DMACH2011 is to explore the opportunities and challenges of using digital media in the research, preservation, management, interpretation, and representation of cultural heritage. Of particular interest for this year conference are issues related to interactive virtual reality, intelligent and wireless hand-held devices, high speed multi-media, and making virtual reality and augmented reality user-friendly and available resources for the general public.

Building on the successful DMACH 2008 international conference held in Amman, Jordan in 2008 and in order to explore and map the challenges and opportunities of using digital media in cultural heritage, The Center for the Study of Architecture in the Arab Region (CSAAR), Al-Turath Foundation, and Queen Rania Institute of Tourism and Heritage have joined together to organize the second edition of the International Conference on Digital Media and its Applications in Cultural Heritage (DMACH 2011). This conference provides a forum to examine and discuss current practices and future directions in the documentation, representation, and communication of cultural heritage using digital technologies. The conference aims to provide the participants an occasion to share and exchange experiences and research findings, to stimulate more ideas and useful insights regarding the uses of digital media in cultural heritage, and to debate their views on future research and developments.

Topics of Interest

The virtual worlds of modern games provide a unique way for us to interact with our memories, interpretations, beliefs, and traditions. This can be the digital simulation and interpretation cultural heritage in the real world, or the equally real social legacies of online communities. We invite you to tackle the complex issues of making these histories come alive in this special issue of Games and Culture.

Submissions can include (but are not limited to):
. Critiques of games and online worlds that involve historical situations or heritage sites.
. Guidelines and arguments as to the design and experience of games and virtual worlds for history and heritage
. Interviews (both physical-world and in-world) with designers of the above games and virtual worlds.
. Critiques or evaluations of sandbox games and virtual environments regarding history and heritage.
. Reports on accidental or planned historical or cultural events, artifacts and rituals that take place in games and virtual worlds.
. Explorations on how to best utilize the unique interactive, technical and psychological aspects of games and virtual worlds for the purpose of historical or heritage-based learning.
This special issue of Games and Culture has two overarching goals:

. To provide case studies involving the design, use and evaluation of history and heritage-based games and virtual worlds.
. To outline the key theoretical debates pertaining to the issues raised by the design, use and evaluation of these games and virtual worlds.

Best regards,

SimAUD 2011 Program Committee

Symposium on Simulation for Architecture and Urban Design offers a venue for architecture researchers and simulation researchers to come together to focus on this important area. Buildings are the largest consumers of energy responsible for 48% of all Green House Gas emissions and due to the complexity and multidisciplinary aspects of architecture design and construction, and urban design and society, modeling and simulation become valuable techniques to understand and optimize this enormous challenge. Scientists, engineers, architects, planners, and designers who develop or use simulation tools are invited to participate and present original papers.
Details about the Conference and Call for Papers and Projects are available at www.simaud.org/2011

All accepted papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library at the SpringSim Archive.

The third issue of the Nomads.usp’s journal brings major changes. The first one is that, from this issue on, all its content is bilingual — both in Portuguese and English. In addition, we created three new sections: the ’submitted papers’ section, which features articles evaluated by a process of blind peer review, the ‘carpet’ section, featuring short articles by specialists from various areas on the issue’s central theme, and the ‘project’ section, where we present submitted proposals of space and objects whose concept is related to the theme of each issue.

Considering guests and authors selected for publication, this issue counts 23 authors from outside Nomads.usp. They are researchers in 8 different countries: Germany, Bahrain, Chile, United States, Finland, England, New Zealand and Brazil. They mostly follow the tendency of working in different knowledge fields, as, indeed, one would expect from researchers interested in systemic visions of the world. Even so, it is worthy to note that among the areas represented here, there is a large and healthy variety, including music, chemistry, law, art, geography, philosophy, physics, design, film, computer architecture, economics, education, electrical engineering, computer science aside architecture and urbanism. Finally, the production of this issue of the journal involved a large number of Nomads.usp researchers, in addition to the four authors of the ‘nomads papers’: 22 researchers participated in various ways, validating the main objective of the magazine which is to create an interactive dialogue between Nomads.usp and the academic community, around major themes addressed by the Center ongoing research.

It is therefore with great pleasure that we invite you to read this broad snapshot of thoughts and experiences of those scholars interested in discussing concepts and derivations of systems thinking, helping us to problematize the matter and to deepen levels of questioning.

SECOND EVENT
=====================================
BIM ANALYTICS: August 4th: FREE
BIM isn’t BIM without Information. For decades, faculty, researchers, and software companies have been developing software tools that are intended predict the performance of a building, for example, energy consumption, day lighting, cost, code compliance, structural analysis, etc. These tools have typically been stand-alone tools that provide a specific analytical capability. The range and depth of these tools has been astonishing, and yet lamentably many of these tools have not been significantly integrated into the design processes of professionals. BIM is a promising technology to encourage improved integration of design analysis into the building model. For the Fourth Annual BIM + Symposium, we will explore the nature of analytical modeling in architecture, engineering, and construction. We will seek opportunities for a more responsive integration of the evidence/simulation based design decision-making. We will have speakers who have integrated simulation and BIM i
n their design process, a forward looking section on BIM parametrics, and informative presentations on interoperability and standards. More information including a list of speakers and registration information will be available on the web site. Please reserve your spot soon; BIM CON!FAB filled up last year.

Keep checking back on the website as additional information will be updated there.

All of us in CAADRIA are deeply saddened by the death of Bill Mitchell, one of the leaders of our field. We would like to share this appreciation of Bill and his work written by Tom Kvan, CAADRIA’s founder.

William John (Bill) Mitchell

One of the things we can say with all certainty is that Bill Mitchell was our friend, a friend of CAADRIA and a friend of each of us individually. He was the keynote speaker at the second CAADRIA conference (the first was too modest to have keynote speakers) and gave our fledgling organization generous support of his time and advice. Friendship was the premise from which Bill started. Bill always appeared to start, with the assumption that you and he could share an enthusiasm about the boundless opportunities in this world, so why waste time doing anything but engaging in such enquiry. With his wry smile and sparkling eyes, he would pick up any topic you proposed (or pitch one himself), start slowly in a measured voice that rapidly gained enthusiasm, typically taking a short detour into an exploration of irony or humor that could always be found in any subject, to end in an insight that you felt privileged to have shared in its discovery (if only because you were there at that moment). Bill did not do things for himself, he could not help but bring everyone else in to share what he was doing. Our only failing was we could seldom keep up; he was so prolific and energetic. As Bill’s health failed slowly over the past four years, several people remarked that this could not be possible; with boundless intellectual energy, Bill could only keep going. And this was true, it was his body that gave up, not his mind or ideas. A prolific author, his last book was published just as he entered his final, intensive and debilitating period of treatment.

In our community in of computer aided design, we all know of the work of Bill Mitchell, not least because he wrote the foundation text Computer-aided architectural design that was published in 1977. Having graduated from the University of Melbourne in Architecture, he went to study at Yale where the Master of Environmental Design was in its prime. He quickly realized that the progress of computational devices was such that they would soon have an impact on the architectural profession. While others wrote elegies to transformative power of digital approaches, Bill set out to write his first book in a style that he never lost – it was a straightforward account of what these systems were, how they worked and what this might therefore mean to the practice of architectural design. With this grounded clarity, Bill demonstrated a capacity to communicate the most complex of fields to the broadest audience. Here, in this first work, was the characteristic engagement of everyone who would open the covers, starting simple and ending up in ground breaking ideas of the potential. Bill’s final book, published in March 2010, addresses the future of transportation, and is unassumingly titled Reinventing the automobile. The same style is brought to bear, the reader taken through a straightforward review of what is and encouraged to take steps to think of what might be, ending in an audacious proposition.

In reading the many tributes to Bill that have been posted or emailed in the past 72 hours, several common points are made by former students and many friends and colleagues. Bill always listened closely, developed ideas with great excitement yet eloquently and made you feel part of their evolution. When asked why he was an academic instead of profiting of his many ideas, he consistently said the excitement of working with the best people and giving them the opportunity to flourish was the best reward he could imagine. I was privileged to first encounter Bill in 1977, just as his first book was published, and continued in several locations to work with and for him. As a research assistant on very early drafts of Logic of architecture I was lucky to see the way ideas developed, were tested and discarded if they did not stand up. As a co-author (with Robin Liggett) on The art of computer graphics programming I was privileged to see how my ideas could be made that much better through the clarity of their articulation and their potential revealed. I still have a manuscript version of one draft, showing Bill’s cut and paste technique (done with scissors and tape, since word processors were not widely available then). Bill wrote with a fluidity and clarity that came from a need to share ideas with anyone who would care to listen. His capacity to write rapidly was also important, since he had so much to communicate. He said that he wrote the first draft of his book on the design of the MIT campus (to which he contributed so much) was written over one long weekend.

While we in the CAAD community like to think of Bill as one of us, his contribution is of course much broader. His incisive architectural thinking can be seen in The poetics of gardens which he co-authored with Charles Moore and William Turnbull. The real change in the reach of his voice came when The city of bits was published. Walking past a London bookshop, there in the window I saw a pile of this title, making clear that Bill had managed to reach to the popular reader and communicate his ideas to a wider audience. From this point onwards, he was recognized and appreciated for his insights into the ways in which digital devices have fundamentally realigned the world. His telling of this story has ended with his last book, where the future of the automobile is largely the future of digitally enabled transportation, and he has left it to us to continue the story telling. All of us, as his good friends, have a part to play, to keep the story developing, to maintain the clarity of its telling and to ensure we do it enthusiastically for the potential and excitement, always doing it for others and ensuring they get as much fun out of it as Bill would have found in the enquiry.
